Etymology
Παγίδα descends from ancient Greek παγίς, genitive παγίδος, meaning snare or trap. As often happened in the shift from ancient to modern Greek, the accusative form παγίδα took over as the new nominative. The word is built on the verb πήγνυμι, which meant to fix or fasten something firmly in place, so a trap was originally something staked or driven into the ground.
