Etymology
Modern Greek ποτάμι comes from Ancient Greek ποταμός, meaning river. The origin of ποταμός itself is disputed. Many linguists treat it as a Pre-Greek word, inherited from a language spoken in the Aegean before Greek speakers arrived, rather than a native Indo-European term. The modern form ποτάμι grew out of a neuter suffix once used to form diminutives, which lost that diminutive sense over time and became the plain, everyday word for river.
