Etymology

The verb is built from the adverb departe, meaning far, with the directional prefix în- and the first-conjugation infinitive ending -a. Departe itself comes from Vulgar Latin, formed from de plus pars, partis, part. The resulting verb literally means to put at a distance, and Romanian uses the same pattern in reverse for a apropia, to bring near, from aproape.
