Romanian "barbar" comes from French "barbare" and Latin "barbarus", which trace back to Greek "βάρβαρος" (bárbaros). The Greek word was originally imitative: to Greek ears, foreign languages sounded like meaningless "bar bar" babble. Over time the word shifted from meaning simply "foreign-speaking" to meaning "uncivilized" or "cruel". "Barbară" is the feminine singular form of the adjective, built by adding "-ă" to the root "barbar".
