Etymology
Romanian borrowed "brutal" from French in the nineteenth century, during a wave of Latin- and French-based vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. French "brutal" itself came from Late Latin "brutalis", built on "brutus", a word applied to creatures thought to lack reason. The sense narrowed over time from "animal-like" to "cruel" or "violently harsh".
