Etymology
Romanian borrowed "exclude" from Latin excludere, a compound of ex- ("out") and claudere ("to close, shut"). The word entered Romanian in the 19th century as part of a wave of Latin and French learned vocabulary. It exists alongside the older, popularly inherited Romanian word închide, which comes from the same Latin root but arrived through everyday spoken transmission rather than scholarly borrowing.
