The word comes from Latin post meridiem, meaning after midday, and was built in Romanian on the existing adjective meridian, itself from Latin meridianus. Meridianus in turn derives from meridies, midday, a fusion of medius (middle) and dies (day). The result is a formal adjective used mainly in legal, administrative, or scientific Romanian to mark afternoon time, paired with its opposite, antemeridian.
