Etymology
Lecție entered Romanian from French leçon, with reinforcement from Italian lezione, both of which trace back to Latin lectio, lectionem, meaning a reading or a thing read. That noun comes from the Latin verb legere, to read or to gather. The word arrived during the 19th century wave of French and Italian borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary.
