Etymology

Câmp comes from Latin campus, meaning an open, flat piece of land. The word passed into Romanian along with the rest of the core Latin vocabulary that survived the Roman presence in Dacia. The same Latin root spread across the Romance languages and also entered English through borrowing, giving words like camp and campus.
