Etymology
Furtună comes from the Latin word fortuna, meaning fortune or chance. In popular Latin speech, especially among sailors, 'fortune' at sea came to mean the unpredictable and often violent turns of weather. Over time in Romanian the word narrowed to mean specifically a storm, while the original sense of luck was taken over by borrowings like noroc. The vowel shifted from o to u and the stress moved to the second syllable along the way.
