Etymology
Nemernic comes from the Old Church Slavonic namĕstьnikъ, a term for a deputy or a person standing in another's place. In old Romanian the word first meant a foreigner or a homeless wanderer, someone with no fixed place of his own. Over centuries that sense curdled into contempt: a rootless outsider became, in common speech, a person of no worth, and the word settled into its modern meaning of scoundrel or wretch.
