Etymology

Francez entered Romanian from French français, itself descended from Latin Franciscus/Francus, the name for a member of the Frankish people who gave their name to France. Romanian picked up the word during the nineteenth-century wave of French borrowings that reshaped much of its modern vocabulary. The ending was adapted to the native Romanian demonym suffix -ez, the same pattern seen in englez and chinez.
