Etymology
Romanian borrowed "vest" in the 19th century, alongside "nord", "sud", and "est", to replace older Slavic and Turkish terms for the cardinal directions. The spelling with "v" points to a German source, "West", rather than French, since French "ouest" would not explain the initial consonant. The word itself goes back through Germanic to an ancient root tied to the evening, the part of the sky where the sun sets.
