Etymology

Comentariu entered Romanian in the 19th century as a learned borrowing, drawn from French commentaire and reinforced by the Latin commentarium. Both trace back to the Latin verb comminisci, meaning to devise or contrive, built on the root behind mens, the mind. The word kept its sense of a mental note or explanatory remark as it moved from Latin into the modern Romance languages and then into Romanian.
