Etymology

Romanian borrowed "tragedie" from French "tragédie" in the nineteenth century, as part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped literary vocabulary. French took the word from Latin "tragoedia", which came from Greek "tragōidia". The Greek word itself is a compound whose deeper origin is debated among scholars, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
