Etymology

Romanian borrowed "limbaj" from French "langage" during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize the vocabulary. French "langage" descends from Vulgar Latin, built on "lingua" (tongue). This is why Romanian keeps two separate words: "limbă" for a specific tongue or language, and "limbaj" for a style or system of speech.
