Etymology

Romanian borrowed "accent" from French "accent" in the 19th century, during a wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian vocabulary. French inherited the word from Latin "accentus", a compound of "ad-" (toward) and "cantus" (song, from "canere", to sing). The Latin word itself translated the Greek grammatical term "prosōidia", meaning a tone added to speech.
