Etymology
Complicat is a learned borrowing from French compliqué, adopted during the 19th century when Romanian scholars rebuilt much of the language's vocabulary from French and Latin. Behind it stands Latin complicatus, the past participle of complicare, formed from com- (together) and plicare (to fold). The core sense is literally things folded onto one another, which shifted into the abstract idea of something hard to untangle.
