Etymology

Conține traces the sense of Latin continere, "to hold together," built from con- ("with") and tenere ("to hold"). Romanian did not simply inherit continere as one block; it assembled a conține natively from the prefix con- and the verb a ține ("to hold"), which itself descends from Latin tenere. Conțină is just the ordinary subjunctive form of that verb, marked the same way any -ține verb is in the subjunctive. The result still mirrors Latin continere and its Romance relatives, such as French contenir and Italian contenere, even though the Romanian word grew from native parts.
