Etymology

Furat is the past participle of a fura, meaning to steal, which comes from Latin furari with the same sense. Latin furari is built on fur, furis, thief, a word some linguists trace to a Proto-Indo-European root for carrying, on the idea that a thief carries goods off. The same root is thought to underlie Latin ferre and English bear.
