Etymology
Romanian "dedica" comes from Latin "dedicare", to consecrate or formally set apart for a purpose, reinforced in modern usage by French "dédier". The Latin verb combines the prefix "de-" with "dicare", to proclaim or declare solemnly. That same "dicare" root, tied to the broader family of "dicere" (to say), also produced Romanian "predica" (to preach) and "abdica" (to abdicate).
