Etymology

Curte comes from Latin curtis, a later form of cohors (enclosure, yard, retinue). Cohors itself was built from co- and hortus, meaning garden. Over time the word spread across Romance languages, keeping the core sense of an enclosed space attached to a house, and later extending to the retinue and residence of a ruler.
