Etymology
Zeu comes from Latin deus, meaning god. Romanian regularly turned Latin d into z before e or i, the same shift that produced zi from dies and zece from decem. Latin deus itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root tied to sky and daylight, the source of Latin dies (day) as well.
