Etymology

Romanian borrowed "elev" from French "élève" (pupil) in the 19th century, during a period when French vocabulary reshaped Romanian education and administration. French "élève" comes from the verb "élever" (to raise, to bring up), from Latin "elevare" (to lift up), built from "e-" (out) plus "levare" (to lighten, to raise). The same Latin root gives English "elevate" and "elevator".
