Etymology
Romanian "rai" was borrowed from Old Church Slavonic "рай" (rajĭ), meaning paradise. It entered Romanian through contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors and through Church Slavonic use in early Orthodox liturgy. Unlike much of the core Romanian vocabulary, it does not descend from Latin.
