Etymology
Romanian borrowed "a fixa" from French "fixer" in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language's vocabulary along Western Romance lines. French "fixer" itself traces back to Latin "fixus," the past participle of "figere," meaning to fasten or drive in. The word entered Romanian alongside many other modern administrative and technical terms borrowed from French at that time.
