Greutate is formed inside Romanian from the adjective greu, meaning heavy or hard, plus the abstract-noun suffix -tate, which mirrors the Latin suffix -tas seen in words like gravitas. Greu itself comes from Latin gravis, heavy. The word therefore shares its deep root with English gravity and grave, even though greutate was not borrowed directly from Latin gravitas.
