Romanian "rată" was borrowed in the nineteenth century from French "rate" and Italian "rata", both meaning a fixed installment or share. Those words descend from Medieval Latin "rata (pars)", literally "the reckoned part", built on "ratus", the past participle of the verb "reri", to reckon or calculate. English "rate" and "ratio" come from the same Latin source, so they are close cousins of the Romanian word rather than mere lookalikes.
