Etymology
Alerga descends from Latin allargare, meaning to widen or to loosen, as in loosening a horse's reins. Letting the reins out gave the animal room to run, and over time the verb's meaning shifted from loosening to the act of running itself. This sense shift happened only in Romanian; other Romance languages kept the original meaning of widening or lengthening.
