Etymology
The verb entered Romanian as a learned borrowing from French "participer", reinforced by the Latin source "participare". This happened during the 19th century, when Romanian scholars deliberately imported Latin and French vocabulary to replace or supplement older Slavic-derived terms. The Latin verb itself is built from "particeps", meaning one who takes a share, from "pars" (part) and "capere" (to take).
