Etymology

Romanian borrowed "imens" from French "immense" in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian scholars reshaped the language's vocabulary along Romance lines. The French word itself descends from Latin "immensus", built from the negative prefix "in-" and "mensus", the past participle of "metiri", meaning to measure. So the core sense is literally something too large to be measured.
