Etymology
Romanian borrowed "indian" from French "indien" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. The root goes back to "India", which Europeans took from Greek "Indos", the name of the Indus River. That name in turn came through Persian "Hindu" from Sanskrit "Sindhu", meaning river.
