Etymology

Romanian borrowed "a vota" from French "voter" in the nineteenth century, during the wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian civic and political vocabulary. The French verb goes back to Latin "votum," a vow or solemn wish, from the verb "vovere," to vow. The link between a vow and a vote survives in English too, where "vote" and "vow" share the same Latin ancestor.
