Etymology

Învăța descends from Latin invitiare, a verb built on vitium, meaning habit or fault. In Vulgar Latin the sense shifted from making something a habit to acquiring knowledge, and Romanian narrowed it further to the specific acts of teaching and learning. The prefix in- survives as the modern în-, and the old root still shows up plainly in the noun viciu, a direct descendant of the same Latin vitium.
