Etymology
Să comes from Latin si, meaning 'if'. In Vulgar Latin this conjunction began to introduce clauses expressing purpose or possibility, and in Romanian it hardened into a fixed particle that marks the subjunctive mood. Because Romanian lost the Latin infinitive in everyday use, să plus a conjugated verb took over most of the jobs that 'to' plus a verb does in English.
