Etymology
Romanian borrowed "satelit" from French "satellite" in the 19th century, part of a broad wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian vocabulary. The French word traces to Latin "satelles, satellitis", meaning bodyguard or attendant. The sense shifted from a person who accompanies a powerful figure to a body that accompanies a planet, and later to a manmade object orbiting Earth.
