Etymology
Romanian borrowed "vedetă" from French "vedette" in the twentieth century, along with its theater and film sense of a leading performer. French "vedette" itself came from Italian "vedetta", a mounted sentinel or lookout posted to watch and be seen. The Italian word traces to "vedere", to see, from Latin "videre". Over time the sense of a lookout who stands in view shifted to a performer who stands in the spotlight, then to celebrity in general.
