Romanian și traces back to the Latin adverb sic, meaning "thus" or "so." Unlike other Romance languages, which built their word for "and" from Latin et (French et, Italian e, Spanish y), Romanian repurposed sic for this role, shifting its sense from "thus" to the coordinating conjunction "and." This divergence is one of the clearest signs of Romanian's separate path within the Romance family.
