Etymology

Său descends from the Latin possessive pronoun suus, sua, suum, the reflexive form meaning 'his/her/its own', used when the possessor is the subject of the clause or is understood from context. Romanian kept this Latin possessive system almost intact, unlike French or English, which lost most of it. The masculine singular form său reflects the Latin accusative suum through regular sound changes.
