Etymology

Steag comes from Old Slavic stěgъ, meaning a pole with a banner attached, used to mark a military unit. Romanian borrowed the word during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors and church culture. The original sense of a pole gave way in Romanian to the cloth banner itself. The word coexists with the rarer, Latin-derived stindard in formal use.
