Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root kh-s-r, which centers on loss and deficit. The base verb khasira means simply to lose. Adding the causative prefix produces akhsara, the Form IV pattern that turns a plain action into one performed on someone else: to cause loss, or to hand someone less than they are owed. The Quran uses this verb for merchants who shortchange customers at the scale, a usage that fixed the word's connotation of unfair dealing.
