Etymology

أَنْجَب comes from the triliteral Semitic root ن-ج-ب (n-j-b), which carries the sense of nobility or excellence in stock. The verb is built on the Form IV pattern (أَفْعَلَ), which often makes a root causative: it turns the idea of being noble or excellent into the act of producing someone excellent. Over time the verb settled into everyday use for simply having or bearing a child, though it keeps a formal, slightly elevated tone. It is unrelated to Indo-European vocabulary, so no PIE root applies.
