Laqīṭ comes from the Arabic root l-q-ṭ, whose verb laqaṭa means to pick something up off the ground, to gather or glean. Laqīṭ takes the faʿīl pattern, which here carries a passive sense: the one who is picked up. The word entered early Islamic legal writing as the standard term for an abandoned child found and taken in by someone else, and it kept that precise legal sense into modern Arabic.
