Etymology
سُور comes from the Semitic root س و ر, which carries the sense of encircling or enclosing. In Classical Arabic it settled on the meaning of a wall built around a city, fortress, or garden for defense or enclosure. The same root gives Arabic words for a bracelet and for climbing over a wall, both built on the idea of something that surrounds. It is a native Semitic word, not a borrowing.
