The verb comes from the Semitic root n-f-q, whose core sense is to go out or be used up. Arabic built the causative Form IV verb أَنْفَقَ on this root to mean making money go out, that is, spending it. The same root gives نَفَق, a tunnel, a passage things go out through, and نَفَقَة, an expense or maintenance payment.
