Etymology

Tārīkh comes from the Arabic verb arrakha, to assign a date to something. Its triliteral root is ʾ-r-kh. Medieval lexicographers and modern Semitists have linked this root to an older Semitic word for moon or month, since early calendars counted months by the moon. From the sense of dating events, the word came to mean the record of the past, that is, history.
