Etymology

Arabic مُحامي comes from the triliteral root ح-م-ي (ḥ-m-y), meaning to protect or defend. The Form III verb حامى means to defend someone or plead on their behalf. The active participle of that verb, مُحامي, is literally the one who defends, and it became the standard word for a lawyer. The sense shifted from physical protection to legal defense.
