Etymology
This is a Form V verb built on the triliteral root z-w-j, which carries the idea of a pair or couple. The noun zawj means a spouse or one of a matched pair. The Form V pattern tafaʿʿala adds a reflexive sense, so the verb means to make oneself part of a couple, that is, to marry. Some scholars trace the noun zawj to Greek zeûgos, a yoke or pair, borrowed through Aramaic, though this is not certain.
