ذَكَّر grows from the Semitic root dh-k-r, which links remembering and mentioning. It is the Form II, or causative, of ذَكَرَ, 'to remember,' so its core sense is 'to make someone remember,' that is, to remind. The same root runs across the Semitic family: Hebrew zakhar and Akkadian zakāru both mean to remember or name.
