Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral root غ-ي-ر, which carries the idea of otherness and difference. The same root gives غَيْر, meaning 'other than.' تَغَيَّر is the Form V (تَفَعَّل) reflexive of the transitive Form II غَيَّر, 'to change something,' so it means to become other than before, that is, to change by oneself.
